Witch hazel contains an agent that causes tissue to contract. This helps reduce swelling and stop bleeding which relieves the pain.

Some people are sensitive to astringents and analgesics (the active ingredients in hemorrhoid creams) so it's important when finding out how to get rid of hemorrhoids to be aware of this when you try various products. Herbal treatments cause less complication.

Regarding hemorrhoid surgery there are various different procedures performed based on the severity of the problem. If the hemorrhoids are internal then litigation is usually the treatment suggested and performed. Litigation involves tying up the hemorrhoid with an elastic band to cut off the blood supply. It will shrivel up and die eventually, then just fall off. This is normally performed at your local doctor's office because it requires little preparation and is a simple procedure. Another choice, similar to litigation, is to inject a hardening agent into the bottom of an internal hemorrhoid. Just like litigation, the blood supply is cut off and the hemorrhoid shrivels up and dies, then falls off. If the hemorrhoids are severe enough then a hemorrhoidectomy is usually recommended. This is a slightly more complicated surgical procedure (still very simple) which involves cutting out the hemorrhoids. This treatment requires a short hospital visit.
